Lots have been mentioned, but I don't think anyone mentioned Michael C Hall, of Six Feet Under and now of Dexter is from here and went to school with Emily Proctor.
As far as writers; there are many "Southern" writers who live here, but I don't know how famous they are outside the area: besides Lee Smith, we have Clyde Edgerton, Jill McCorkle, Doris Betts, Reynolds Price, and Allan Gurganus right in the area. Also, Armistead Maupin grew up in Raleigh, although of course he has been in San francisco for 40 years and they (legitimately) "claim him".

Also Mary-Louise Parker went to school in the Triad, if that counts. Lewis Black, as mentioned, is in Chapel Hill quite a bit, and I've personally passed by him a number of times on Franklin St.
I don't think Clay Aiken actually lives here anymore, but I could be wrong. His mother owns a business in Cary right up the street from my house though.
I think Clay's house is for sale in Wakefield...
