Liliping,

He teaches Hip Hop in Context...The class studies the music and it's culture from 1983 to 1997...Can you believe it? I can't. Oh he is also the CEO of HP4 Digital Works, a Video/Film Production and Entertainment Company, serving the global entertainment community for video, film, editing and production services in Durham.

Lots have been mentioned, but I don't think anyone mentioned Michael C Hall, of Six Feet Under and now of Dexter is from here and went to school with Emily Proctor.

As far as writers; there are many "Southern" writers who live here, but I don't know how famous they are outside the area: besides Lee Smith, we have Clyde Edgerton, Jill McCorkle, Doris Betts, Reynolds Price, and Allan Gurganus right in the area. Also, Armistead Maupin grew up in Raleigh, although of course he has been in San francisco for 40 years and they (legitimately) "claim him".

Depending on whether you consider reality show contestants "celebrities", Ted from Survivor: Thailand in 2002 lives in Durham

Also Mary-Louise Parker went to school in the Triad, if that counts. Lewis Black, as mentioned, is in Chapel Hill quite a bit, and I've personally passed by him a number of times on Franklin St.
