I've lived in North Carolina for basically my entire life, and in the Triangle since 2000. Late last year I moved to Cary. Something that I've encountered since I moved here is that some locals seem to refer to Cary Parkway as simply "The Parkway." Though I had driven this road countless times before, I'd never heard it called this way until I moved here.
Is there some kind of history here? Is this the generally accepted way to refer to this road? Or is this just a coincidence and it's only a few rogues who came up with this nickname for the road on their own?
Yeah I have never ever heard it called The Parkway. My husband was born and raised in Cary. I just asked him and he gave me a "wtf are you talking about??" look haha.
I have heard the playful colloquial usage "The Parkway" sometimes in Cary, although not very frequently. But I'm not sure what your point is or what you're asking about it, orulz. "Is there some kind of history here?"? What do you mean? It's not exactly a very creative or arcane slang term.

Well, first, I was wondering if this is how most cary-ites refer to this road, so that I could adopt the local expression. I wouldn't want to seem like an out of towner referring to the Beltline as "The 440" or something like that.
As for my inquiry about history, I was wondering if the name was simply "Parkway" before but the town renamed it adding "Cary" at some later date. This might make sense because the name of the development I live in is "Parkway." This would be similar to how Morrisville Parkway evidently used to be Crosstimers Parkway a long time back.

Cary Parkway has been there in some form or the other for at least 20 years. They have added and connected parts since then, but it's been there a while, at least from where it connects to US 1 back toward the Parkway development.
I like how they built that private school right in the way of where Cary Parkway was supposed to connect to make a full loop. Oops lol.
