We moved to Apex a few months ago but use Holly Springs water. We have noticed that the water seems a little icky. We are not sure if it's the place we moved into or the town's water. Our filtered refrigerator drinking water only tasted good for about 60 days after installing a new 6 month filter. We have also noticed the filters in our humidifiers become disgusting in a matter of 2-3 weeks whereas in Cary we could use those filters up to 5 weeks (and we never saw te amount of mold and bacteria we do now). Is it the water source? Does anyone else in Holly Springs think the water is gross? Could it be the plumbing in the town home we moved into (only 4.5 years old)?

Well Holly Springs gets water from Lillington. Here is a notice about them changing the way they treat water on March 1st.

Be interesting to see if your experience changes after then. Also you may want to check with your neighbors and see if they have similar complaints. I have Holly Springs water and don't really notice a problem with it, but then again I grew up on Harnett County water so it seems the way it has always been to me.

Regarding your humidifier, I am on Cary water and would only use a ultrasonic humidifier that can be cleaned out with some bleach water. We had another type and the interior got funky fast and the funky parts weren't meant to be immersed making it impossible to properly clean. I can't imagine what one of those wicking-type humidifiers must look like after a few days.

We haven't had any problems with out water filters though.

I'm a stay at home mom so I'm able to stay on top of humidifier maintenance. I found a wicking style with a uv light and the base and tank are dishwasher safe so I can sanitize them. I never had the icky moldy bacteria problems like I do now that I live here and use HS water. In my toddler's room I use a warm mist with a uv light which i rinse And dump daily as well as devalue once a week with vinegar. Even that one has been getting ten times nastier than when we lived in Cary. I hate those Ultrasonics because even with the demineralization cartridge I had white dust all over everything. I really loathe most humidifier designs because they are not user friendly for cleaning and maintenance and many have those fatal design flaws that you note. And I hate Kaz (the company that makes 90% of them) because it doesn't seem like their engineers are thinking well about practical use. Humidifier rant over. :-)

This month is the month they switch out the water sanitation to chlorine. Could be that, otherwise the water is a bit hard at time but never gross. I use the fridge filter.
