I'm looking for less expensive sources of black oil sunflower seed in the SW Cary/Raleigh area. I had been buying it at Ace for a decent price, but it's now $19.99 for a 20-lb bag (was $16.99). Anyone have a cheap source? I thinking some sort of farm supply store might have it at a good price, but I haven't seen any around my usual stomping grounds.

(No gourmet places like WBU - the birds in my backyard eat waaaaay too much to buy them anything fancy!)

Thanks!

Sometimes Ollie's has good buys on birdseed. (you never know for sure what they'll have though) The mix we got there last time was really cheap and has been attracting all kinds of birds. Love seeing woodpeckers and cardinals at the feeder!

I agree with Ollie's! I just bought 2 20 pound bags of mixed seed for about $7 a bag. The birds (and the squirrels of course) love it!! Even more so than the expensive seed I was purchasing from other locations. It has attracted cardinals, finches, mourning doves, and many other beautiful birds. I also bought some suet bricks and the blue birds are devouring them. Looking forward to seeing my hummingbirds soon!!

Yeah, I've see inexpensive mixes in various stores, but I'm specifically looking for black oil sunflower seed. Thanks though!

It looks like Petco might be an option, if the in-store price matches the online price.. $29.99 for 40 lbs.. definitely better than $19.99 for 20 lbs.

Ollie's had huge bags of it the other day for $7.99 I think!

We buy our sunflower seed from Tractor Supply (in Youngsville). Last time we got a 40lb bag for around $25.

I buy black oil sunflower, no mix, at Home Depot or WalMart for about $10-12 for a 40lb bag. Tractor Supply is a good source also, but too far a drive for me to compete with Home Depot.

Better check again. Two days ago the black oil was $17 for 20 lb. at walmart.

Carpenter Farm Supply has 40 lb. for about $32.
Buy Local, it's often even cheaper.

Maybe double check the size of bags that you are buying.. I've never seen 40lb bags of black oil sunflower seeds for $10! I'll be hitting up a few places tomorrow and will report back what I find.

Funny thing is I get way more birds at my feeders in spring/summer/fall than I do in winter - I'm thinking my neighbors must stop feeding once the weather gets warm. Last year I couldn't believe how many fledglings I had at my feeders!
