At least we have more forward-looking leadership in Raleigh and can get some more efficient Bus service. By the way, if you live ITB, CAT is pretty good for getting to and from downtown.
I'm encouraged by what I'm hearing lately regarding the will of leaders to get a truly effective transportation system moving in this region. WUNC (NPR, 91.5) did a nice piece this morning on the effort of the region to be forward-thinking with regard to ramped-up and increased bus service, along with light rail and streetcars. They spoke with Mitch Silver and David King. Both of these men clearly get it, and I'm thankful that there are people who really want to see this area remain competitive in the years to come with all the growth we're experiencing. The fact that there are no current alternatives to single passenger trips on I-40 is inexcusable.
Face it, Raleigh-Durham is one of the fastest growing metros in America. Rail, expanded bus, you name it, is all going to be required as the area continues to grow. Much better to implement a good transit system now than to go and do it later at much greater cost.
The Triangle is getting denser (more dense?) as it continues to grow. As rail gets implemented, you'll see nice dense urban project sprout up along the line.
I'm moving back here from a large (but certainly not huge) city on the east coast, and I have become increasingly frustrated and disenchanted with the lack of any real commitment and interest in mass transit down here. I cannot believe that a region of this size does not even have commuter rail or more efficient bus service. Please correct me if I am off base, but the lack of any real regional mass transit will frustrate significantly any efficient growth (which may be what some folks want anyhow). Are people down here content to just jump in their cars to go any and everywhere?
You should have moved to Charlotte. Charlotte has the 1st Light Rail in the state that opened Nov 24, 2007. Only 1 line is open now but at least 4-5 more lines are planned and will open in the up and coming years.
Charlotte also has a FREE trolley that goes all around the Uptown area that is great too for visitors & convention goers.
I am sure that Raleigh will follow suit and have Light Rail one day. It takes time & millions of dollars & DENSITY!
