My husband and I (and 3 young kids) will be relocating in mid-may from Albuquerque NM to the RTP area for his job. I will be coming out to secure a home to rent in about 3 weeks and need some advice and recommendations. His job is going to be in the part of RTP closest to Cary, so we are mostly looking there for housing. We need recommendations for neighborhoods to look at would love a DM for possible realtors willing to help us as we are not from this area.
Here’s what we are looking for:
We need a single-family home to rent that is 3-4 bedrooms and a minimum of 1400 sq ft. for about $1200/month. The house MUST be a single story with trees in the back yard. This is important because we are moving from the desert and NEED trees! I would also love it if it is nearby a “parkway” access-point. I am not too picky on the age of the house; just want it decently updated and clean with a respectable landlord.
What neighborhoods would provide this kind of house? I have sifted through TONS of these threads and can’t really narrow down the ones with single-story homes and ample trees (not sticks…trees!)
I have read that many realtors don’t help with rental-relocation, but I will only have 2-3 days to secure a rental...So, if you know of any who would be willing please DM me with the info. (as a side note, what kind of fee should I expect to pay for this kind of service?)
Can your husband's employer set up a realtor to help you? Most realtors stay clear of rentals but company sponsored relocation may pay a realtor to help you. We had this when we moved here from New Orleans in 1989.
Be sure where you rent provides a decent commute to the work site. Public transit is very skimpy to nonexistent in outlying areas.
The house MUST be a single story with trees in the back yard.
Needing a single story will seriously limit you. Most single story homes are 3 bedroom ranchers, and most 4 Bedroom are colonials. I used realtor.com and spotted 3 listings in Cary which were older ranchers. Apex and Morrisville will give you a few more. If you go further out in the country, like Holly Springs and Fuquay-Varina, you will see more ranchers. The built-up areas will have mostly two-story houses because the land is more expensive. A four-bedroom ranch is almost impossible to find, but there are a couple in Durham, (and they have trees).
BTW, Realtor.com does allow you to seach for rentals with a single story, and the price and square footage you need. These are listings handled by real-estate firms, not individuals, however.

As far as getting a relocation realtor from the company, we are on our own. The move is for a brand-new job w/o relocation assistance.
The house must be a single story because I have a 5-year old with very poor depth perception...so stairs are not an option.
Thanks for the tip about Craigslist scams. Here the big problems are people breaking into vacant homes, getting them re-keyed and renting them out as a scam on Craigslist too. Also have a few friends who had their rental home foreclosed on. So a reputable management company or landlord is a must.
Trees are a requirement simply because my husband and I have been born and raised in the "icky-brown-sandy-blah" that is the desert of AZ and NM.
I just glanced through the triangle mls and really found one place that was big enough and a ranch, in troon village in cary. The ranch part is going to be very hard to come by! I know *many* houses in the ABQ area are ranches (and in the AZ area as well) but they are much less common here, so you may need to expand your search beyond cary. On an aside, I have a great friend who relocated to ABQ years ago, he is a writer, Stephen Ausherman. Wrote 60 hikes within 60 miles of ABQ.
My older neighborhood in central Cary is mostly 1 story homes with lots of trees: Irongate and Coronado Village. I don't know about rental prices here although real estate in this area is generally lower than the rest of Cary. We love it though, it's wonderfully diverse, great for families, close to everything, quiet and is particularly beautiful this time of year because of all the trees and "mature" yards.
