They sit up high and watch for roadkill. There's a TON of them that roost on the water tower at Bayleaf on Six Forks Rd. Some days there will be so many you can't count them. They regularly feast on deer, possums, etc that get hit by cars.

They fight over dead squirrels....must be a delicacy or something. Two/Three of them at a time working one on the side of the road. First time I ever saw one it was off in the distance, I thought it was a blackbird or crow. But when I got up on it I saw this nasty looking Turkey Buzzard chowing on a roadkill deer.
My daughter and I saw some in our neighborhood last night, also on a roof. They are huge and really interesting to watch! In that case they were parked in view of a dead possum in the road. They had been attending to it before we walked by, then they flew up on the roof - assuming they stayed up there until we left and they felt comfortable have their possum snack once more.

Vultures seem to like water towers. There are usually a lot of them on the one in Knightdale, too. I took this picture about 4 years ago.
Where I live, after a heavy rain, they will line themselves up on the roof of the apartment building perpendicular to me. They sit on the very top. It's an eerie, and creepy, sight watching them spread their wings while they dry out.
We have a terrible over population of deer in downtown Wake Forest. We also have a fairly good amount of Fox, feral cats, vermin and surely other creatures.
When I first moved here, one of these vultures tried to attack a 5 pound dog...in front of several humans. He/she veered at the last moment.
Food chain, I guess.
