Interesting to see that I-430 in Arkansas and I-375 in Michigan will be outright decommissioned. While NC tries to obtain new I designations, other states are wanting out of some of theirs... presumably to save money.
I'm confused by the I-430 stuff. It looks like they're just moving the U.S. 70 designation to a different segment that partially overlaps with I-430. I don't think I-430 is going away.
I-375 in Detroit is only a mile long. It was going to need to be rebuilt, but they decided to convert it to a boulevard partly due to cost but also as part of the general trend toward trying to stitch neighborhoods back together that had been severed by freeways decades ago.
Rode through the East End Connector corridor, headed from Brier Creek to 85/north Durham, yesterday.
It finally occurred to me that, not only will the all-new short 2 mile ? 147-to-70 connector be designated 885, but also the leg of US 70 from the new 885 connector road to 85 (past the exit onto Hwy 98, and Cheek Road) will also be part of 885. Makes sense because it connects 147 eventually to 85, but I'd always just envisioned the brand new, short connector as only being 885.
I came to this epiphany looking at the new overhead signs on 70 that are still mostly covered, but I saw 885 poking out from underneath the burlap, on a part of the sign that would indicate the route-straight-ahead (the old 70 corridor which has been open the entire time) toward 85 north or south.
It's going to be signed I-885 all the way between I-85 and I-40...even-numbered three-digit interstate connecting two other interstates. Will be about 8 miles total.
And the current Triangle Parkway section of NC-147 connecting I-40 to NC-540 will be renumbered NC-885.
Also, I assume the current NC 147 will retain its number north of the I-885 split. Too bad it wasn't numbered NC 185 or 385 to begin with. Likewise, the hardly-known SR 1728 for Wade Ave between I-40 and I-440 could/should have been numbered NC 340.

Yes, NC-885 will be tolled as it is now.
And yes, the remainder of 147 from I-885 into downtown Durham will remain NC-147.

That currently tolled portion south of I-40 is what will be NC-885, so yes, it will be tolled.
With the freeway portion of US-70 going to be signed as I-885, I wonder if NCDOT will want to eliminate the US-70 Business designation through downtown Durham in favor of making it mainline 70. With all of mainline 70 around downtown having an Interstate designation as well (85 or 885) it seems a bit redundant. Plus it would reduce the sign clutter on what is currently 85/15/501/70 around Northgate.

Oh wow- didn't know that 147 from 40 up to the connector will also be signed 885. interesting. Thanks for the info

Another option is to re-route US-70 onto NC-147 through downtown Durham and eliminate the NC-147 designation altogether.
