I have to admit I don't really get the love for Dame's. The one time we went they opened almost 20 minutes late, then were having all sorts of issues with their hostess and servers communicating to each other, then told us about a 1/3 of their menu was "sold out but if you come back later we'll have that stuff" (wtf we're sitting down NOW to eat!), and when the food did finally come out the chicken was horribly overfried. My husband was so annoyed he refuses to ever go back.
Sorry to hear about your bad experience eva! I've been several times and always had a great experience with service and food. I love any of the plates with the chicken legs and they have never been overfried although I could see how the cutlets or wings might get overdone on a bad day.
I will say that I think the chicken at Beasley's is better (especially the buttermilk fried chicken sandwhich!) but I was horribly disappointed by the waffle - way too big and cakey for the size of the chicken. And only a drizzle of honey. Seemed skimpy compared to the excess of sauce and schmear at Dame's. Love the Dame's waffles - personal preference.
If you ever get out to San Francisco (which might be a while given the impeding baby arrival), check out any of Tyler Florence's places in the Bay Area. Went to Wayfare Tavern in the city and the Organic Fried Chicken is amazing - it's definitely not a super breaded and crispy southern fried chicken but the best hubby and I have had ! Plus popovers!
For some of you this'll be a drive, but Virlie's and Al's Diner in Pittsboro are delicious, and Small St. B+B (also in PBO) serves a really good, interesting breakfast too.
Mmmm....breakfast.
Just saw on Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen's fb status that they're going to be featured on the Travel Channel's "Drive Thru Paradise" the day after Christmas.

They do have great biscuit sandwiches & incredible cinnamon rolls!
Also in Durham try Benetti's, just up from Brigg's. It's in the same shopping center where the S. Durham farmer's market is. Wonderful food & servers!!
Williams Gourmet Kitchen is fantastic too! It's on Hwy 55 in the strip mall where Big Lots is. Can't go wrong no matter what you get there. Home - William's Gourmet Kitchen
If you really want to go scrappy check out the County Kitchen in that same strip mall.
Mama Dips in Chapel Hill for great country style breakfast. I really miss Griffin's in Raleigh though. My friends parents owned that restaurant and they did it right! After they sold in the mid to late 90's it went downhill quick though and eventually closed.

They re-ran the show recently, and this got me interested in the "best breakfast" idea. After seeing some votes from ex-Texans that a "breakfast taco" is the best breakfast, I'd like to start a discussion of the biscuit vs. taco for breakfast. Personally, I will vote for a fresh-made ham and egg biscuit any day.
