Hi Everyone,
My family and I are driving from Florida to check out some areas of SC (and NC). Besides good schools (we have a 5 year old), the #1 on our wish list is to find a nice walkable neighborhood in the low $200's if possible. We are open to townhouse living if the neighborhood is what we are looking for. By walkable I mean being able to walk to shops, restaurants, etc. We came across Bedford at Falls River and it seems to be what we are looking for. Is this place worth checking out? We work from home so commuting is not an issue. We just want to find a safe, family friendly, walkable neighborhood where the people are down to earth. Any opinions are appreciated! Thanks for the help

Bedford has won many awards and is a very desirable neighborhood.

The idea was to have sidewalks on both sides of the street, small park areas throughout the n'hood and front porches on the homes to encourage a neighborhood feel.

Falls River and Bedford meld together. Some of the same builders.

In Bedford, you must join the pool. In Falls River, you have a choice. Bedford is newer.

Bedford and Falls River are Definitely worth checking out. I live by both and they are nice communities with lots of nearby amenities and loads of sidewalks for walking. I also love the nearby greenway trail that runs for miles along the Neuse River.

One caveat, while it is a very walkable area and there are dining and shopping options nearby, I don't know if it will meet your criteria of being walkable to shops and dining. There are a few places in a small strip mall inside Bedford you could easily walk too, but I find the options there pretty limited. Thereis also some good stuff in a shopping center next to FallsRiver, but it would be a two mile walk from Bedford. Still, I definitely think those neighborhoods are worth checking out. Good luck!

Lots of people seem to really like Bedford. It appears to be a decent, family-oriented development.

I've always had a sort of avoidance issue with it because when they first started developing, they clear cut such a gigantic area and it was FLAT. And it was clay. And, I dunno. It weirded me out.

I like some variance in the topography.

I haven't ridden through there in a couple years or three. Maybe it seems different all filled with houses.

I do agree with NRG. I don't know that it's what most people think of as "walkable to shops and dining" anywhere out in that area.

Well, if he is looking for space between him and his neighbors, he may have to give up his townhome idea!!!

And...if he wants more space, acreage ain't gonna equal to walkable!

I would check out the amount of traffic on the main road in & out of the neighborhood at rush hour.
I was walking over there the other evening and it wasn't a pleasant walk along Falls River at 5 pm.

I have considered that area for house shopping but I am not sure now.
My idea of a leisurely stroll down to the shops in the evening may be squashed.

I'm here in Bedford. We moved here when we moved to Raleigh 5 1/2 years ago. It has been the best decision, and we love it here!
