I agree with some of the previous posts like VickiR. I live in Holly Springs and in our neighborhood (Oliver Creek) for instance they have community get togethers throughout the year. They just had an Oktoberfest celebration. They do a fourth of July get together and I know different neighbors have had open house during the holidays. There is a sign up every week where the neighbors meet for Bunko. There are natives and transplant in my neighborhood and it seems at least here you can be as involved or keep more to yourself. Overall I have found this type of atmosphere to have a good balance. Not too nosey or caddy (your not snubbed if you don't attend) but yet genuinely friendly. One couple who recently moved out of the area threw a party for the people who were buying their house to get them aquainted in the neighborhood--just because they thought "they were such nice people" you don't here of that kind of thing happening often, but I guess it just depends.
We are in a townhouse complex- transient by nature. Yeah, filled with the dreaded transplants from all over, including NC, VA, etc. We were greeted warmly, one neighbor even baked us a loaf of zucchini bread! People here are friendly & helpful. Our mail lady is wonderful, and our garbage men too.
