Most everywhere you go the house roofs have dark black stains all over them, even newer homes and expensive looking mansion type homes. I've never seen that before. Up north you saw alot of damage from the acidic pines, but most of the homes here don't even have pines anywhere near them.

We just got a new roof, and were told that it is algae. Our new shingles have granules that are supposed to prevent the spread of the algae. I guess we will see!

Here is an article that discusses removal of the algae. Black Algae Stains On Asphalt Shingles

We just had our roof replaced, and the company that did it said that is a type of fungus which grows here because of the heat and humidity.

Interesting. I have always noticed it, but never realized it was a problem....I guess because I've been here forever.

The black stains are not a huge concern.

They are algae poop.

Well, yes. They can be a cosmetic concern, but do not create a leak or wear hazard.

Roof washing:
Never let someone wash the roof with high pressure. Chemicals do most of the cleansing work, so pressure is not needed. A good washing can make an old roof look bright, bringing out the original color of the shingles.

The problem ranges at least up to MD. I used to live in Edgewater, MD and almost every roof there that was over 5 years old had the stains. It was not a problem up until about 30 years ago.

Interesting question and answers...I also have noticed this and attributed it to poor quality materials.. Iwas not aware it was attributed to a fungus.
