I don't understand why the Raleigh Police Department and the Wake County Sheriff's Office refuse to enforce the traffic laws in place to protect children regarding school zones and buses. Raleigh/Wake county has never been inclined to get into the traffic cop business like other areas I have lived. Many areas in Virginia have large motorcycle arsenals to maintain traffic laws on a regular basis. The idea of never knowing when/where one might be was a strong deterrent for me growing up and learning to drive. Also the most feared infraction would have been anything within a school zone. Seems traffic laws are not on either agency's priority list here and as a result drivers pretty much do as they wish, school zone or not. I just don't understand their policies.
I almost never see local police in the Triangle manning a radar gun and looking for speeders on local roads. It's unlike anything I experienced in any other part of the country in which I've lived.
I've seen Cary PD running radar in the Cary High, Reedy Creek Middle/Elementary, and Davis Drive Middle school zones. I think it really just depends on the department and where their budget priorities lie.

This is what I have noticed in Raleigh specifically. In the almost 7 years I lived there I saw one instance in which a RPD officer was "running" radar. I have noticed on my drives through Morrisville, Cary and Apex that the town PD's in this area, seem to take traffic enforcement more seriously than Raleigh does. I have also noticed that the highway patrol in this area of the state has also gone pretty much unnoticed by me over the last seven years.
As a former police officer I can understand that RPD officers could be busier with more serious issues on a daily basis, but I'm very surprised they don't have at the very least a specific traffic unit in operation. I need to remind myself to slow down now that I am living in Apex, because living in Raleigh for 7 years has spoiled me. Before everyone jumps all over me, I'm not a reckless driver or someone that speeds excessively.
At least that is the impression one would get if they read all the posts on city-data from people asking for advice on how to get out of paying for speeding tickets they "don't deserve". Can you imagine the number of those posts we would get here if enforcement picks up???
But seriously, it saddens me that as adults many people still don't recognize the importance of slowing down in school zones, stopping for school buses, and in general following speed limits unless there is a police presence providing a "strong deterrent".
I said I am not an excessive speeder. Obviously 95-99% of the general population speeds (by definition). I usually go 5 mph over on highways, but always at 25 while in a neighborhood or school zone. You'd be surprised at the amount of people that drive recklessly through n'hoods or school zones.
