Check to see if the Durham County Criminal Resource Center can help your husband. Dont know if you have to be 'in the system' here in NC or what....
Durham County : Criminal Justice Resource Center

Alot of times its the TYPE of charge that will hold you back, not just that you have a charge.
Used to send guys from 1/2 way house to McDonalds for a job. They would lie on their application about criminal background. They would get hired and fired in 3 weeks. It was a drug charge or stealing charge that would get them fired. But they would have 3 weeks pay in their pocket. I would tell them to keep looking everyday while they were working. MOST times they would find better employment before McD's caught up and fired them. Nothing like stinking like McD's a few days in a row to motivate someone to find a better job! lol That was 10 years ago, so that may not work anymore! LOL

Good luck....and dont listen to all the negative Nellies. I think if your husband came ahead of you to set up house, he would have alot of opportunity's that he wont get trying from afar.

I moved here (Durham) with no job. Had a job in one day
I moved to Macon Ga, had a job in 2 days
I moved to New Orleans, had a job in one day
I moved to Nashville, had a job in a week.(dead winter)
I moved to Albuquerque, NM and had a job in 2 days

Course, I am in the construction field. Alot of jobs available usually. I took whatever I could get. I show up on time. I dont drink or drug and have a DL? thats pretty much the golden ticket to a construction job.... lol
Thank you for the encouragement. It is exactly what we are going to do. If you know of anything in construction, please let me know. His charges are pretty bad. They are old, and most were against his parents (ie: breaking and entering, burglary, theft- but all from his parents' house when they kicked him out as a youngster).

He is a hard worker and I just know he can find something if we keep trying.

Maybel,

Is your husband active on social media sites like twitter and Facebook? I see position announcements posted there often for many local businesses, especially locally owned restaurants. I would start following as many local businesses as you can on social media( in addition to more traditional job searching) to optimize job leads.

Has he checked out Monster, Careerbuilder, etc? When I was looking for a job I got e-mails from Raleighhire or Raleighjobs. Definitely check out the websites.

There are newspapers at the grocery stores and such called Job Finder. Not sure if they have a website, but when I was looking for a part time job they had a lot of customer service jobs, etc.

I worked at a hotel in college and they really didn't seem to care about criminal records etc. It was in Durham off HWY 55. Not sure if it's like that now, but I remember our assistant manager was on work release from jail during the day. There are tons of hotels, ,restaurants, and stores around here. Not sure how they are on people with criminal backgrounds though. There are quite a few call centers too.

I agree with others though it may be a good idea to visit the area first before chosing a location. Personally I like Durham overall. I lived in Durham a lot of my adult life, but there are tons are cities around here that he may find a job in. Depends on how much you like traffic or traveling. What about temporary apartment or extended stay he finds a job. If you have dependable transportation and don't mind traveling it should be fine to chose a location first.

Good luck!!
