My dad visiting from India is a type-2 diabetic (self-injects insulin and things are in control)
I'd like to buy one of those blood glucose meters, so he can monitor his blood sugar effectively.
Any recommendations? It should be accurate, not complicated to use and test-strips that don't empty my wallet . (I'll have to buy them in bulk and give it to him.)
I bought a Relion Confirm meter from Walmart. (about $15) Strips are $8.98 (20), $19.98 (50) and $35.88 (100). I tested it against one of the name brands I had, and it appears to be just as accurate.
I'm confused. How does he know how much insulin to give if he doesn't check is BG regularly? One of the essential control issues is regular testing. My doctor practically gives them away. In fact she does give them away when I told her I sometimes go to bed or watch TV and don't get up to test. She insisted I have one in the kitchen, by my chair and by my bed. It's the testing strips which are so expensive over the long haul. I'm sure you would want to make sure he can find the right strips for whatever you get him back in India so I would think that should be researched first. Good luck
ps you might post this in the Health forum under Diabetes and you would get more answers since major brands are sold all over the country.
Thx for the inputs. He doesn't use one yet, back in India he has a full service lab very close to home and use to get it done like every 2 weeks. It's inexpensive there and also visits his diabetologist like everyother month or so.
I second the ReliOn Confirm from WalMart. My husband is Type 1 and tests frequently. Insurance won't pay to cover as many test strips as he needs to use a day. The WalMart strips are the most economical. My Mom is Type 2 and uses a ReliOn micro. (she also uses a Micro for her diabetic dog) Both testers use the same strips and both have been quite accurate compared to other meters.
Freestyle meters have special programs made for those who need assistance and a lot of people qualify for free strips.
One Touch is a great meter but I think the strips can be pricey.
Accucheck is what medicare/medicaid requires now and I think they have programs to help as well. Most companies do but I know Freestyle in particular has a card that is glued onto the box of their meters with an 800 number to call to sign up for assistance.

Thanks. I'll get this.
