I am a DC native (have lived in northern Virginia for 42 years) and my husband and I are contemplating moving with our 3 children to the Triangle. We generally like the area we live in; however, we are a couple of miles from Tysons Corner and the traffic is becoming unbelievably heavy, which limits what I'm able to do with the kids after school.
I posted an earlier question regarding the Hasentree to Ravenscroft commute but would like to also hear from anyone familiar with the differences between the DC area and Raleigh/Chapel Hill. My kids (ages 3, 7, and 10) enjoy dance, drama, horseback riding, basketball, and swimming. My interests are sort of on hold until the youngest is a bit older; however, I have enjoyed taking some gourmet cooking classes lately.
We are trying to decide whether it's best to keep our family in northern Virginia or move to Raleigh/Chapel Hill. Has anyone made that move in recent years?
Thank you.
I have enjoyed reading other's posts and responses to a variety issues.

Reason: Additional information
I lived in Tysons when my husband and I were first married (about 5 years ago) with no kids in our mid 20's in a condo behind the Sheraton. I love that area (and as much as we love this area may move back there in the next couple of years for business reasons). I commuted to DC and my husband commuted to Richmond. We moved to Richmond for his job (plus we were able to buy twice the house for the same amount of money. We live in Cary now and I'm not that familiar with Hasentree (although the pictures I've seen are amazing), but this area is incredibly family friendly and definitely not as fast paced as Northern Virginia. I'm sure that any activity you want for your children you would be able to find here. I love to shop (although with two small children I don't really have time to do much of it) and I do miss Tysons Corner. None of the malls here compares. I don't know if that matters to you. I also don't know if you'd consider private or public schools, but there aren't many public schools that are as good as the schools where you are now. There are many very good public schools, but I'm just not of the opinion that they are of the same quality.
Hello:
My wife and I were born and raised in Maryland, in the DC suburbs of Montgomery county. We moved to the Cary/Holly Springs area in 2004, with our 3 kids (11, 10, 6). It is a wonderful area--lots to do, great weather, nice people, less traffic, parks, etc. Unfortunately for us, we have to move back to the DC area for work reasons.
Suburban DC has some of the best K-12 schools in the country. The Triangle has some of the best Universities in the country. The DC area Universities are closer to the Triangle Universities then the Triangle K-12 Schools are to their Suburban counterparts.
Loudon, Fairfax, Montgomery, Howard and others are some of the top schools systems in the country.
How do think Chapel Hill K-12 schools and Ravenscroft (in Raleigh) compare to Fairfax County public schools?
Thanks
