I live in Chapel Hill/Chatham County and am wondering if any towns in the triangle area have their fireworks shows someplace "outdoorsy," where one can bring a blanket and some snacks to watch them? I see that Chapel Hill does theirs in Keenan Stadium, I'm not so interested in stadium seating (or fighting my way into a stadium).
I would think there would be some sort of show over Jordan or Falls lake, but haven't found anything. Any ideas? I don't mind driving a ways, just don't want to fight traffic only to eek out space in a parking lot or streetside!
No, the Eno does not do fireworks. It's a day festival only and ends about 6 or 7.
I don't know that I'd call Koka Booth Amphitheatre outdoorsy in the sense that JanuaryGirl is asking about. You do take blankets or lawn chairs, but it's an enclosed space (very nice), but I think traffic would probably be just as bad or worse than Kenan. Some people go to the top of the parking decks and watch (again, not the outdoorsy option you're seeking) and there's a regular small contingent that lines the sidewalk of MLK and watches, but you can't quite see the whole show from there. Great getaway time, though.
You could go down to the beach for the day. I think there are a lot of good shows around Wilmington.
Though it is about a 40-minute drive from your area, Garner always puts on a nice show at Lake Benson Park, and the NC Symphony performs as well. However, their fireworks display/concert will be on the 5th, as the Symphony plays at Booth Amphitheatre on the 4th.
The show at Brier Creek is visible from a bunch of large parking areas.
A lot of people drive around until they find a couple of open spots and tail-gate picnic an hour before dark.
Thanks for the replies, we may check out the one in Garner or Cary!
It's too bad none of the towns do fireworks over Jordan Lake... seems like it would be the perfect spot with plenty of beaches/day-use areas to check them out from all along the lake (and with different entry points so it wouldn't be so congested).
What happened to the fireworks at Millbrook Park in Raleigh? I could drive my car to a nearby parking lot, watch the fireworks, and drive back home without setting foot out of my car. I miss that!
