You never heard of it because they shut it down in the early 80s and poured concrete into the main entrance.
Parts of it still exist under the library, Fresh Market, etc.
But, it's nothing like it was when it had shops and clubs in it.

Oh, this was our favorite place to go back in my college and post-college days! Some of the places I remember were The Pier bar/lounge that had great bands, Café Deja Vu and The Bear's Den, both clubs, and a high-end stereo store called Soundhaus. Before "my time", there was a place called The Frog and Nightgown (I believe that was the name), and an arcade at one time. Those were the days before NC had liquor by the drink but had brown-bagging instead. You could take your alcohol into the clubs and buy set-ups.

I went to the Village Subway all the time. It was modeled after Atlanta's Underground...only smaller. I ducked in Cafe deja Vu after work for a brew and to watch a silent film. The Pier was great for live bands, and I'll never forget listening to a pair of Bose 901's for the first time at Soundhaus. It's all still down there...abandoned and rotting.

Adding to this, does anyone remember when the Electric Mall on Hillsborough Street still had all its interior shops open? If you go in there now it is CREEPY.

Absolutely! Used to go there quite often.
Any idea what they'll do with the place?

As far as I know nothing. The shops that currently occupy the outer units use the inner units for storage. Such a waste of sqftage imo.
