I don't think Acme is that upscale, personally. It's not like Bon Soiree was or something. I'd put it at semi-casual, but I think they've maybe gotten a bit fancier over the years. They used to offer a great beet burger at lunch, but they only do dinner and Sunday brunch now. I wouldn't think twice about taking kids there for brunch, though.
Crook's does a Sunday brunch, too.
If you're looking for something more uber-casual you could go to Ye Olde Waffle Shoppe on Franklin St — a Chapel Hill classic, or Breadmen's — super cheap eats for kids when your little one gets to the noshing stage. Elmo's is always great, and super family-friendly with a kid's menu and coloring pages, but popular, and there's often a wait. You could also get the best biscuits in the world from drive-thru Sunrise Biscuit Kitchen.
Yeah we kept waffling and didn't make a decision until we suddenly found we had made it all the way down to Crook's Corner lol. I want to go back and try their pizza sometime because they looked really good too.
