Hi, I had a wreck on the snow day last week. It was my fault since I rear ended the person in front of me. Luckily no one was hurt. His car had minor damage but my estimates run over 3k which will cause 4 points to be added to my record. Is there a way to reduce points?

Unless you were issued a traffic citation by the police for the accident then no points will be added to your drivers license. Your auto insurance rates may increase depending on the terms of your policy coverage and prior driving/accident history....but that's strictly at the discretion of your insurance company.

Thank you! No citation issued but there's an incident report.

I may be entirely wrong here - but I thought insurance points could be assessed for an "at-fault" accident regardless of whether a citation was issued.

Again, it depends on the insurance company and prior record history of the driver and policy claims...some companies have accident forgiveness provisions for the first accident but I'm sure many factors are considered in determining when/if they raise rates. There is no one size fits all answer to the OP's question and they really should consult with their auto insurance company.

Sorry to hear that happened to you. My husband is in a similar situation. He was involved in a collision that same day. His truck was stopped on a hill because all of the traffic was stopped. So he pulled the emergency brake and got out of his truck to assist pushing other stranded cars up the hill. While he was out of his truck, it started sliding and hit a parked car that a lady had abandoned on the roadside. Her insurance is saying it is his fault since his truck hit the other car. We will just let the insurance companies fight it out over who is going to pay for what but I am really hoping that they will take the weather into consideration on a lot of the accident claims from that day. Some accidents just could not be avoided.

As for your situation, I am glad nobody was hurt. I agree with the other posters that you shouldn't worry about points on your driving record since no citation was issued. Whether you will get insurance points added to your policy remains to be seen, similar to my husband's situation. Lets just hope that the insurance companies will be understanding of the chaotic and dangerous conditions that day and not penalize drivers with premium increases for accidents that were caused by ice rather than driver error. Best of luck to you in resolving your situation.

As others have said, no citation, no points on your license. In NC, your insurance will almost certainly go up if there is a police record, citation or not. Insurance in NC goes up even when it's 100% not your fault. I was rear ended several years ago - the other guy's insurance paid for everything, but my rates still went up for three years.
