No. If the room and all finishes are lighter, go with something darker on the counters to create more drama with contrast. That said, keep it neutral. If the floors and cabinets are light, try to introduce some darker elements with furnishings, area rugs, etc. Avoid green and other color specific granite colors.
If the room finishes are dark, contrast it with a lighter granite for the same reason.

Unless you have a very specific design aesthetic that is professionally driven, staying neutral and using contrast to create interest is the best "do it yourself" advice.

People often make the mistake that making everything light will make a room feel brighter and bigger when, in fact, it often makes a room feel drab and lifeless. Don't be afraid of contrast.

LOL!

In all seriousness, I have seen more Uba Tuba, Venetian Gold, and Santa Cecelia than most other countertop colors in new homes made by custom builders. This includes high-end stuff (Copperleaf and the like).

If not one of those, something similar to them. I think that the Venetian Gold or Santa Cecelia and similar types look really good in a room with stark white cabinetry because the veining patterns pull in some darker colors for contrast and if you pull those into a creative backsplash, it will only make those colors pop even more.

Our house had white cabinets and we put in Venetian Gold; we got several compliments on the countertops and it sold quickly.

I have put medium tone grey granite with natural maple shaker style cabinets. It worked well with stainless appliances and a multi-tone grey glass tile backsplash.
