I am seeking referrals to an ophthalmologist and optician in the Raleigh area for glasses and contact lenses. I live near Crabtree Mall and would like to stay within 25 miles or so from there. Have strong myopia (about -11 diopter on the glasses) but no other eye health issues. With that much correction, I need more individual service than the optical chains can provide. I do not have insurance for routine eye care. Thanks in advance for your suggestions. New2RAL

I would suggest Duke Eye Center. Duke Eye Center -- Ophthalmology -- Eye Doctor Raleigh, Durham, Cary, NC, though I doubt they are non-insurance friendly.

We've been using Dr. Eric J. Oberdorf at Stonehenge Vision, which is five minutes north of Crabtree Valley Mall right on Creedmoor Road.

I thought he was very thorough and the office was a pleasure to work with.

It's been a while, but in the past I have worked with Dr. James Kiley and thought very highly of him.

Dr. James Kiley at Raleigh Eye Center for Ophthalmology and Optometry - Raleigh NC

Yes, Duke Eye Center just cured my night-blindness with 2 cataract procedures.

They are great but costly if you don't have insurance to negotiate the fees.

Agreed.
I used to see Dr. Oberdorf in Wake Forest and he found that I had a retinal detachment during a routine eye glass exam. When I went to the surgeon they were impressed that he had noticed it because it was apparently very easy to miss. He's also very nice.

I appreciate these recommendations. I will contact the offices for Doctors Oberdorf and Kiley to see about an appointment. When living in Atlanta, I used Emory University Eye Clinic for a while. It seemed like overkill to use them for routine needs, and I later moved to another practice. Sounds like Duke could be a similar situation, although I will call them and ask them about their fees.
Once I see someone, will be sure to post back with my experience, in hopes it will help others. Thanks!
