^ As the username suggest; I am a Tar Heel...but suffice it to say; there is a much larger State fanbase in this area. For no other reason than State has far more alum and is located near more of the population.

State has an alumni base, especially those with engineering degrees, that matches well with many Triangle area employers. This is no accident given the Land Grant mission of the institution is to primarily feed practical degree graduates into the state's and nation's economy.
There was a New York Times article a few months back that covered this topic: Link
It looked at a bunch of Facebook data to construct a college football fan base map. In the Triangle, State's in the lead for part of Wake County, but UNC fans are in the majority for the rest of the Triangle (and state of NC).
I'm not from around here and don't have any affinity with any of the local colleges. As an outside observer, it seems to me that NC State has the most visible fan base in the Triangle as a whole. I don't know if it's the largest fan base, but it seems to be the most visible.
Generally, the Triangle is State territory. For every one Carolina alumni, I know three from State. And because Duke grads go home after getting their degree, they're not part of the local debate (unless you're talking to currently matriculated students).
Last year I was given a Tar Heel hat to wear when knocking around on the weekends; I'd find myself in the craziest conversations while out and about because I was wearing blue. Forget the Bloods and Crips, they ain't got a thing on Carolina Blue versus State Red.
I don't know if it's just because the fans are more fanatical, but going by bumper stickers, flags in front of houses, licence plates, clothing, etc, ECU has a huge following in this area.
Maybe it's because so many ECU students actually come from this area, compared to the State and Carolina, which seem to bring more students in from out of state.
