Holly Springs Rd from the Swift Creek bridge up to Penny Rd. It's only a mile or two, but when there is no traffic, I downshift to 3rd and open 'er up.
Favorite road in the fall has to be Creedmoor Road, from the intersection of Strickland/Creedmoor, all the way to Creedmoor. It is hilly and country and you can really see the fall leaves (in October).

Any roads that have farms and country settings.
This is one of my favorites, as well. I really like Northern Wake, very pretty area especially up around Falls Lake heading out to Creedmoor. Eastern and Southern Wake, those areas look more like Eastern NC, so not too pretty IMO. Western Wake heading out towards Jordan Lake and Pittsboro is pretty.
Agree. Every time I drive down Highway 64 between Cary and Pittsboro I remark to my wife how pretty of a drive it is. Somewhere along the way west of Jordan Lake heading eastbound, there is a fairly high hill where you get a great view off into the distance - love it.
Awesome thread! Sometimes you just want to take a drive, so it's nice to know some enjoyable routes. I'm gathering lots of good ideas here!
I agree with VickiR on Creedmoor - I actually kind of like the whole road but that portion is definitely the best.
This reminds me of a time years ago when I lived in Wilmington, years before I ever thought of moving here, that my boss sent me "up to Raleigh" to run some errands. Since it was my first time in the capital city, I was commanded to drive St. Mary's to get a feel, and also to eat at Char-Grill. Boss provided use of his luxury car, gas and lunch money. That was a fun day!
Anyways... here's my list (from the other thread) but with some detail for those not familiar:
- St. Mary's from downtown up along Lassiter Mill Rd to North Hills: 2-lane road through pretty neighborhoods
- Wade Avenue from Glenwood to the highway: Hilly, curvy, fun! (That's not to say I condone speeding or reckless driving.)
- Quail Hollow Dr: Another nice neighborhood drive. Stop off at the park!
- Durant Rd: 2 lanes, nice and smooth... Kinda country...
- Raleigh Blvd: 4 lanes, I always gawk at the swamp, lots of birds there!
- Centennial Blvd: 4 lanes, no traffic... how did they get those giant boulders in the median!?
- Lake Wheeler Rd past Tryon: 2-lane country road with open skies, green pastures, cows and you can stop off at the lake...
My favorite nearby country/twisty drive is New-Hill Olive Chapel Rd/New-Hill Holleman Rd out past Shearon Harris. Also can stop at the county park there and hang out by the water for a while (or make a pit stop). :-)
