tbill (and others)-
After you try the other great options that have been contributed, you might want to try Durham Literacy Center (
Durham Literacy Center |). There are a surprisingly high number of people in Durham County that can't read, so the Center gives them the gift of literacy.
I'm currently going through training to be an adult literacy tutor there. There are lots of retired people who are going through the training, so it also might be a great way for you to meet others. The center needs lots of adult tutors, as well as ESOL tutors and GED tutors.
They do formal training twice per year, then you work one-on-one with a student for a few months at a time. It's an awesome organization, and I'm sure they'd love to have you.
