My husband and I along with our young child are thinking of relocating from Long Island, NY to North Carolina and from what we've researched, Chapel Hill seems like it Amy be agile fit. We would still need to visit and research further but I would appreciate any insight on the area. We would love to find a new home in a gated community with nice scenery. School district is important to us, so any information about the different districts would be helpful. Thx...

Please search the Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill sub-forum for many, many threads on the Chapel Hill/Carrboro school district.

There is the Governor's Club in Chapel Hill which is gated. It has homes in the million dollar range. But if you are looking to spend less, most neighborhoods in Chapel Hill are not gated. People do not feel the need for gates because the area is not dangerous.

We don't really do gated communities so much.

Governors Club has a Chapel Hill address but is actually in Chatham County and not part of the coveted Chapel Hill-Carrboro School district.

Can't think of a single gated community in Chapel Hill. Plenty of neighborhodos with nice homes and nice scenery and it is a very highly sought after school district; but no gated communities.

From the information you received in your other thread, I don't know how Chapel Hill came into view.

Considering where your husband will be working is likely to be downtown Raleigh, Chapel Hill makes for an unnecessarily long commute. And I thought that Charlotte was a good fit with more professional opportunities for his job hunt (TV media industry).

Truthfully, I think you're putting the cart before the horse. Come tour the entire truangle area AND the Charlotte area. Then see where he gets a job. THEN narrow down to the community.

Why a gated community? And why Chapel Hill only?

When I first started scoping out the Triangle in 2006 I started with Chapel Hill too, because that's the big bright light for people languishing on Long Island. But that lasted for about ten minutes once we visited the first time.

Agree about the cart before the horse. These folks then did another query saying they really wanted mountain views, but with Chapel Hill quality schools. I'd say good luck finding a job in Asheville. A degree of realism is needed.

I did not see much about your price range. Not to suggest it would be an issue for you but that often has much to do with where people end up.
