Anyone have kids who go there? What are your impressions of the school? I have a friend relocating here and that school may be where her son ends up. I'd love to have some feedback on it. Thanks!

My daughter was there for 7th and 8th. It's a decent school. It's older, so it's not in a shiny, new building, but I found the teachers more than adequate for middle school content.

School pulls from some decent neighborhoods and performs pretty well as far as rankings, test scores, etc.

My daughter was in band and she found it adequate. She really was just doing it for a hobby. I know they also offer orchestra, if your friend's child is into music at all.

I know a bunch of people whose kids go there, no complaints. However, the entire neighborhood that is getting moved there from Mills Park is not happy about it.

Course they're not.

I have two children that attend West Cary. One for 6th through 8th and the other has been there 2 years now.
They have a new principal this year. Got a new asst principal last year- he seems pretty strict (probably a good thing in this age group). Don't have any real impression of new principal yet.

I was there a lot with my first kid and was friends with some substitute teachers there.
My kids went to a smaller private school before switching over to public, so we have experienced both settings.

The kids wanted to go to West Cary since their friends were going to go there. They didn't have an art program but I think may have added art as an elective more recently. East Cary has art. West Cary, as mentioned has band and orchestra.

They offer Spanish as an elective too. They offer several sports for 7th and 8th graders.
It is a diverse group of students and parents.

We have had pretty decent experiences overall, but here and there came upon some very challenging situations with certain teachers. I won't elaborate here but in some cases you had to advocate for your kid and it may even involve changing classes to a different teacher.

Math seems to me to be the weakest area for teachers there- it's hit or miss. They have a few that seem content to fail more than half the kids in the class. There is one math teacher that is especially good but you have no real say in which teacher you get.

This is hard as I come from an education background and am a huge teacher advocate- so I don't say these things lightly.

I'm not sure if you have specific concerns but I am glad to try to answer any q's.

Their football field/track is in the middle of a forest which you have to access via a greenway - kind of quaint unless you are running late to your son's football game and have no idea where you are going.

LOL my parents went to my DS' football game there and they had to drive my mom over in a golf cart because the terrain is so bad!

My daughter is currently in 8th grade at West Cary. It is a a decent school, and it probably doesn't get the same high scores as some of the other Cary middle schools because the free and reduced lunch percentage is higher. I agree with much of what Stlr118 says. However, after sending 3 kids through 6 schools in Wake County, both public and charter, I learned that the teacher situation is similar across the board. You get good, energetic, caring teachers and not so good, apathetic teachers at all schools.

One pleasant surprise at West Cary has been the lack of discipline problems and preteen drama. The kids seem like a good group, and the counselors and assistant principals do a good job of nipping problems in the bud.

I actually like the track/football/soccer field at West Cary. It is tucked in the woods behind the school, and easily accessible by a short paved walk on the Black Creek Greenway. You can park in the greenway lot on Maynard Road.
