North Raleigh, which is still "in" Raleigh, but is really much more suburban in feel. You will find a handful of decent one and two bedrooms under $800.

We are looking to spend between $500 - $800 rent wise and be no more than 20-30 minutes from Raleigh

Any advice?

Thanks

The Triangle area is very large.
It takes well over an hour to go from one end to the other at rush hour.

Find where your jobs will be, THEN look for the apartment.

I'm seeing a 2br apartment ITB, 6 minutes from dt Raleigh for $750

I'm seeing 2br apartment literally downtown Raleigh, $525 a month, close to sketch area though

2br duplex for 750 though this one might be in a more depressed part of town

2br townhouse in North Raleigh for 800

1br off Glenwood for 730

This is all through craigslist. I've used CL exclusively for living situations here and have encountered no scams. You have a few options depending on your adaptability. Raleigh isn't an overly dangerous area at all especially compared to NY/NJ, so even Raleigh's "sketch" areas are very livable for a few months while you get on your feet.

What about looking in Garner? In comparison to most other burbs, it's close to DT Raleigh and is typically less expensive than the others.

Thanks everyone, I really appreciate the input and advice.

We'll be making our first of 2 or 3 trips down to look around the area in a few weeks.

Hopefully I'll have more of an understanding of the area after that.

Thanks again!

Honestly, you are going to have a difficult time finding an apartment in Knightdale for 500-800. The average apartment rent in town is mid-900, in my experience. I think you'll find the same is true almost anywhere in Raleigh.

Wake Forest.

You will find that when you come here and ask someone how far something is away, they say 20 minutes. 20 minutes on I40E at 5PM is 1 mile, 20 minutes on US 1 N at 5PM (Capital Stop-go vard) is 3 miles. So, it all depends on the time of day you want to be 20 miles away from.

It is in the lower range for a nice 1 bedroom apartment, $750 - $800. But it can be had. Good luck!

The reason a lot of the surrounding towns have more expensive rent is 1) proximity/ease of commute to RTP and 2) age of the construction. There's a lot of apartments in Raleigh that were old when I was in school 25-30 years ago. These are often in very convenient locations for getting downtown, but are a bit of a pain if you need to commute out to RTP.

What are your fields? That may or may not impact where your likely job location will turn out to be.
