Our daughter is turning 4 in a few weeks, and we'd like to have a small birthday party for her outside the home. Can anyone recommend a good restaurant in Chapel Hill, Carrboro or Durham that does kids' birthday parties well? We weren't really impressed with Chucky Cheese and don't want to do something like McDonalds. There will probably be only 4-5 kids, with more adults actually. So, someplace that adults and kids can enjoy at the same time...

Not sure if there's a Jellybeans near you, but my daughter had her 4,5,6,7,8 birthday parties there and had a blast! AND it was more affordable than many other places- and they do all the cleanup and even take the presents to the car! I think the price covers up to 6 kids!

There's also an arcade that the dads and older kids enjoy! Moms are usually happy talking! lol

Kidzu Children's Museum in Chapel Hill does a good job on birthday parties for that age group you could then head down the street to any number of restaurants including Elmo's Diner....

Jellybeans and Kidzu sound good. But my only concern is sometimes those places are booked well in advance. I wonder if you would have more luck just trying to find a kid friendly restaurant. I just can't think of anything off the top of my head at the moment.

The birthday parties that I went to with my then 4 year old daughter were generally 75 minutes of physical playing and barely 15 minutes of eating. I think the best were at places like an indoor kids' gym where there were a lot of padded things to play on.

Why not just take them to the Museum of Life & Science in Durham? There are places to picnic across the street and in the city park next door, or you could eat inside the Museum.

Or you could go bowling... I've heard really good things about parties at most of the bowling alleys around here, and those automated lanes can put up the bumpers for the kids and take them back down for the adults.

Thanks everyone for the ideas. We've basically decided to go to a park (hopefully the weather will be nice) and do it ourselves. If there's rain, I'm sure Elmo's will be happy to accommodate us. All of the places that organize parties want at least eight children and a lot money up front, so it doesn't make much sense to do it that way, especially since we just moved to the area and our daughter only has a few friends. We can do the bigger party next year when she turns five.

I think a group of 3-5 year olds would be happy having a small party outside where they can play games and run around. I know I would have been at that age!

Great Idea! Our daughter had her last birthday party at the park 9 years old) and everyone had a blast! There was a covered picnic area and we put balloons on the beams closet to us, and plastic birthday tablecloths over the tables and ordered pizza! It was great! Kids had a blast!

I think the park is a great idea with a rain back up plan. You might bring a craft activity for the quieter time and balls and stuff for the running around games.
