It sounds like you've opened a few threads but maybe didn't get the answer you were looking for. Have you considered some of the smaller towns east and west of Raleigh for cheaper housing. Places like Burlington, Greensboro, Knightdale, etc?
Burlington actually reminds me a bit of my hometown in CT. And actually, kind of ironic, the town just north of my hometown is called Burlington.

Burlington and other Alamance County towns do have some manufacturing jobs, eg at Precor Equipment, Burlington Manufacturing, Jet-Hot, Synergy Health, Serta Bedding, as well as other machine shop or assembly jobs.
You should find some inexpensive housing, but you should check the neighborhoods in person.

There are rival web-sites that do crime maps, and we are not supposed to reference them. However, I can say that southeast Burlington has the highest crime rate, and north and northwest are safer areas. Elon and Gibsonville (outside of Burlington) are rated very safe. You would have to balance your desire for cheap housing with the crime factor.
