Looks like a gray rat snake. Saw one the other day. More afraid of me than I of it.

Especially! My stomach turns just thinking about all the beneficial snakes that are destroyed unnecessarily.

Proper identification of a copperhead should at least be a qualification for being a professional landscaper!!

All snakes are innocent until proven guilty. In my opinion there is not much reason to kill them as they serve a useful purpose. To a large degree, one can take measures to keep them away from your house.

I get a lot of this type of snake in my yard (in fact I guess some hatched in a half full bag of garden soil I'd left out...picked it up to pour it and baby snakes fell out).

Good thing I generally like snakes :-O

Here's a baby copperhead - it has the same markings as adults but with the yellow tail tip.
Hope that suckha was dead, with a finger that close!

Looks like - I forgot to mention that wasn't my picture, just something I saw on FB and then found via google.

I admit I would have tried to relocate it

Just today I had to rescue one of these snakes from my dog. At first I had no way to tell if my dog had a copperhead in her mouth or a harmless earth snake, so I chased her around the yard fruitlessly yelling "leave it!" over and over; then when she dropped the snake and rolled on it, I managed to save it, run away with it, and deposit it in the wood, leaving my dog to search for it for the next 1/2 hr.

Mean of me, perhaps, but the snake is surely grateful
