What I've learned is that if you have ants inside the house, there must be ant mound(s) outside somewhere nearby. This year I walked around the yard, found several ant mounds, some big some small, killed them all with ant mound killer (like Terro powder)... haven't seen them inside yet.
We've gotten tiny ants in our house, normally beginning mid-spring, for the past two years. The first year when we moved in, it was bad. This past spring not bad at all. Terro liquid ant baits solved the issue completely for us (until the following spring). We just set the bait out where we saw ant trails and that was it. After about 48 hours, the ant problem was gone.
Forgot to mention... if I do find ants in the house I use clorox wipes to remove the pheromone trail. Hopefully this slows down the next batch that will find its way into the house!
This was the first year I didn't have them (knock on wood) - but I've always tried Terro and then needed to call in a pro. I don't know why my local ants are just not into the terro.
I have never had much luck except the borax bait that allows them to eat and take back to the nest.
It takes will power to let them feed for a day or so and ignore.
It almost seems like you are making the problem worse because they all come like it's a
$5 all-you-can-eat buffet. But in the end it solves the whole problem.
We had a stream of sugar ants in the kitchen (when I took the kids to visit my parents and the home was alone with my husband - haha!), and we ended up using mint jelly with borax spread onto cardboard around the path of their adventures (it's important to watch for and identify their travel route -where they enter the kitchen, where they head, etc). They take it back to their nest and it kills them. It was extremely effective, and they never came back. It's also critical to keep a very clean kitchen during this period - so ensure the dishwasher door is fully closed, ensure no food scraps are in the sink, and I would usually 409 the sink in the evening before going to bed (we have no disposal here, so keeping the trash can cabinet fully closed helped), and ensure no crumbs are on the floor. Good luck!
Use Terro liquid bait at Walmart for $5. Put down a couple where you see their trail inside. Let them eat a few days and you should see activity drop off after an increase.
Put down another set a week or so later and let them finish the job. Works good lasts long time. I kept the second set down for a month or two in case I had stragglers.

This !!!!
Worked like a charm for me ...
Important not to clean and put ant spray where their trail is.
The more that feast on the Terro the better.
