We did contest it and it was removed since it was not a requested or approved service.

The birth included 2 epidurals because the first one missed, and ultimately ended in a C-Section as progress was not being made after 12 hours, and a 1 week stay in the hospital. There were some other minor complications as well. The epidurals were done by 2 different doctors, and the delivery done by 2 different doctors across the time in the hospital due to shifts. So the bills we received were spread across multiple anesthesiologists, surgeons, specialists, assistants in the delivery room, pediatricians etc so it was a good year before they stopped rolling in. Total costs if we hadn't had insurance would have been around $150,000.

How did people have babies 30 years ago? Was it the norm to be billed tens of thousands or even hundreds of thousands? I feel like everything has really gotten out of control in healthcare in general.

And in those days you didn't get booted out after 48 hours. I think my mother was in the hospital for a week after all five of us (and we were born in different hospitals).

As has been posted, any one who pokes their head in the door to talk to you will bill you. It's outrageous.
