Anyone know why they have security guards at WRL? I've been there a few times and they have special security on site. Did I miss something? Do other branches have this?
Many of the library locations have security. It is planned on a case by case basis just the same as with all other kinds of county facilities.
It's sort of a 'community policing' approach. Security kindly reminds folks to take their food outside, turn down the volume in their headphones, and other sorts of 'respect your neighbor and the facility' kinds of things. Then enforce the rules so that library staff can do their jobs without disruption. They probably do prevent bigger problems from occurring. some locations have homeless people who spend a lot of time there, and sometimes they have needs that are greater than the library staff are able to attend to. Sometimes people are in crisis and don't know where else to go.
Do you feel unsafe in the library? That's the more important question to answer. I worked in several WCPL locations for 4 years and never once felt at risk. And I did encounter some colorful characters. I now work at a school library, and we have a School Resource Officer (town policeman) all day every day. He's a good guy and we like having him around. I don't think that means that anything sketchy ever happened there...especially because our school just opened in August, so we have no history to work with. Its just to plan for prevention.
West Regional is very safe.
It is also the busiest library in the state.
Security is there for the the exact reasons Stagemomma stated. Security helps with crowd control.
Security is usually at the far end of the adult wing sitting at the last desk. I see them there around late afternoon/early evening. Usually a black girl.
