So I did not realize this but I believe both are owned by Laotian owners. Just Bida Manda is larger plates and Brewery Bhavana is dim sum plus dinner. And they are very close to each other.
We weren't that impressed with Bida Manda. Sausage appetizer was good, Sea bass with panang sauce good, but curry we ordered was not exciting. Dessert was so-so.
We did get to see a waitress drop a tray full of glasses. That was exciting.
We don't get to downtown Raleigh that often. I think next time we will try Brewery Bhavana or something else.
Prices at Brewery Bhavana seem pretty pricy compared to a typical dim sum place.
I like both, but tend to agree, Bhavana can be expensive. My experiences with Bida Manda have been more impressive than yours (except the glasses), but that was also a couple years ago now, so things may have changed?
Our strategy for Bhavana is that we'll go there and split a couple of Apps and each get an interesting beer, and then "hop" over to somewhere else. We did just that a week or so ago. Bhavana, City Market Sushi and another place (I forgot the name) for some steam buns and what not. App-hopping, as we call it, in DT Raleigh can be fun.
I just went to Bida Manda for the first time and was pleasantly surprised. I expected it to be a little overrated, but found the service and food to be great. We had the crispy rice lettuce wraps, papaya salad, and chili salmon. My husband was already planning our next meal there. I haven't had a chance to visit Brewery Bhavana, but I wouldn't compare it to standard dim sum fare. I think you would probably be disappointed.
Pretty sure Bida Manda and Brewery Bhavana have the same owners.
I'm a big fan of both. For Brewery Bhavana, we found that we liked the apps better than the main courses. We will likely only get apps next time. Both are beautiful places with great service and food.

.
They are bothed owned by brother/sister combo Vanvisa Nolintha and Amphone Nolintha, with Bhavana being their second restaurant
It's not really a question of which one is better but what you're looking for - Brewery Bhavana has great beer and dim sum style plates - smaller plates to share. Bida Manda has laotian/thai food and larger plates for each person.
Ok I will check reviews on Yelp and write one myself for Bida Manda.
