Just went to renew my registration and pay car tax. Notice there is now a $3 transaction fee no matter if you pay via savings, checking or credit card. I don't understand why they would implement this?
Back to mailing a check via snail mail. I can't see how opening an enveople and depositing a check is cost effective for ncdot.

The N.C. Division of Motor Vehicles uses an online service, called PayIt, that allows you to take advantage of completing multiple services in one secure transaction.
PayIt collects a $3 fee per online transaction that it uses to deliver quality services more efficiently with no upfront costs to NCDMV. The State of North Carolina does not collect or benefit from the transaction fee."
Convenience fees for online transactions are nothing new........sounds like they are paying a company to provide the online payment service for them so that company would need to be compensated.
The State of North Carolina does not collect or benefit from the transaction fee.
Riiiiight. The state wants to say (maybe correctly) that the whole amount goes to the payment processor. If that's true, the state benefits by having that processor collect all the fees. I want to know the details of the contract between the state and payment processor. I find it hard to believe that it's a $0 transaction.
Governments and businesses have been doing this crap for a while now. I guarantee it costs more for someone to physically open the envelope and process the check than some automated service, even if it is a 3rd party managing it. But they know people will pay the stupid fee anyways - myself included; going to the post office requires a special trip that's completely out of my way.

I guess you don't have mail service at your address?

Meh, still requires me to get stamps & envelopes, then hope it doesn't get lost in the mail. Nope, still not worth it. I ultimately hate keeping clutter around for those rare oddball bills that might save me a couple of bucks mailing them in
