"After more than a year of agonizing over what to do with the controversial "Silent Sam" confederate memorial on UNC Chapel Hill's campus, the university system has entered into a settlement to hand over possession of the monument, and funding, to a group of its supporters.

The system said Wednesday it has entered into a consent judgment in a lawsuit filed by The North Carolina Division Sons of Confederate Veterans (SCV) regarding the statue. The agreement says UNC will hand over the statue, as well as all rights, title and interests of the statue, to the SCV.

The settlement also stipulates that the SCV will forever maintain possession of the monument "outside any of the fourteen counties currently containing a UNC System constituent institution" – meaning it's unlikely the statue will be reappearing near any UNC System campus.

The university system also agreed to establish a charitable trust of $2.5 million to be held independently by a non-party trustee and used only for "limited expenses related to the care and preservation of the monument, including potentially a facility to house and display the monument.""

I thought the same thing as you, but I just googled it and found this:
About the 'First in Freedom' Plate

“Designed by license plate collector and North Carolina historian Charles Robinson, the "First in Freedom" plate design recognizes two important events: the signing of the Mecklenburg Declaration of Independence on May 20, 1775, and the Halifax Resolves on April 12, 1776.

These two events are also commemorated on the North Carolina state flag and are regarded as the first steps toward independence from Great Britain during the early stages of the American Revolution.”

In regards to Sam, please stick him in some confederate pride museum so the rest of us don’t have to see him.

One simple step in the right direction for these types of issues would be to repeal the law that says local jurisdictions and universities have no control over what statues are on property they are responsible for (city, county, University property). The state's meddling in areas they had no business has only aggravated these situations and been a breach of due process from Day 1. A legislator in Charlotte should have no say over what monuments are displayed on County property in Alamance County nor should a legislator in Yadkin County be dictating what monuments can be on display in Chapel Hill.

Of course the bigger systemic issue is the lack of respect people with strong views on this (and many other) issues have for even listening to someone else's perspective, which is why these issues result in the hot messes that happen. That is the more pervasive issue.

But letting the local decision makers be the ones accountable for what can be displayed where is good policy in general as the local officials are more accessible to the people voting for them than a legislator in a different district making decisions on behalf of people who don't elect him or her. Not perfect, but a step in the right direction.

I read that the Confederate soldier statue at the Chatham County Courthouse in Pittsboro was also removed on Wednesday night. There had been protests there. It is being stored until the United Daughters of the Confederacy finds a place to put it. The UDC has sponsored dozens of satues across the country.

What other country allows it’s citizens to raise statues and fly the flags of failed rebellions? Especially those that only lasted 4 years, and was to maintain slaves. In any other country they would have never allowed any statues and banned the confederate flag within months of war end. Thats why we are free in the USA, no where else would any remnant of the confederacy been allowed to exist...

Freedom means many things. Erasing history isn't one them.
