I do. On a 1.5-hour flight to Phuket next to a guy with a runny nose constantly sneezing I caught his cold first night at the beach. I wish he or I had a mask. It's the ones not wearing them and spreading germs I'd avoid more.
I've worn masks on flights before, and recommend it for long flights, especially international. Except for the discomfort I have no problem with doing it and I never got funny looks. Maybe Americans are too cool to wear them.
While you often see people in Japan wearing masks any time, they don't wear masks all the time, they do when they are sick or during the remarkably and increasingly worsening pollen season as they are extremely respectful of others around them and most places are very crowded. It is a Good Thing. Also if you don't do it when you are sick you will get seriously dirty looks. And, no one will sit near you.
Outside of the Haze season I saw a far less masks in Singapore as they are much less considerate, but it's an unfair comparison as Japanese people are unique in their extreme conscientiousness of not infringing on others personal space or other forms of imposition; many Americans, not so much.
