I had the flu shot, but I still take precautions. I even carry a folded bandanna in my back pocket. I don’t hesitate to whip it out and cover up when I feel the need.

I do. On a 1.5-hour flight to Phuket next to a guy with a runny nose constantly sneezing I caught his cold first night at the beach. I wish he or I had a mask. It's the ones not wearing them and spreading germs I'd avoid more.

I've worn masks on flights before, and recommend it for long flights, especially international. Except for the discomfort I have no problem with doing it and I never got funny looks. Maybe Americans are too cool to wear them.

While you often see people in Japan wearing masks any time, they don't wear masks all the time, they do when they are sick or during the remarkably and increasingly worsening pollen season as they are extremely respectful of others around them and most places are very crowded. It is a Good Thing. Also if you don't do it when you are sick you will get seriously dirty looks. And, no one will sit near you.

Outside of the Haze season I saw a far less masks in Singapore as they are much less considerate, but it's an unfair comparison as Japanese people are unique in their extreme conscientiousness of not infringing on others personal space or other forms of imposition; many Americans, not so much.

You can wear a mask all you want but if you touch the germ and then touch your eyes, nose or mouth (which you may do once you’re safely home) you’re done. Hand washing is also your best defense.

You missed my point. Of course if you have no choice where you sit, you want the sick person next to you to wear a mask. But in an open seating situation, people don't choose to sit next to the person wearing a mask.
