Unsurprisingly, NCDOT is facing a massive budget shortfall and has announced delays to dozens of projects. Projects already underway or awarded or which have dedicated funding will continue.
Many of the delayed projects are bridge replacements, but here are some of the bigger ones in our area:
- I-440/Wake Forest Rd interchange improvements
- I-95 widening/interchange improvements north of Dunn, as well as in Cumberland/Robeson counties
- Railroad grade separations of New Hope Church and Durant
- Glenwood upgrades/interchanges from T.W. Alexander to I-540
Apparently they would not inconvenience enough drivers doing this Stay at Home period so they chose to wait until everyone is back to work to put up the orange cones I see.
Now would be the perfect time to repave Wade Avenue into Raleigh. It’s been over a decade, and the daily filling of the same potholes and buckling certainly aren’t working...

That’s not true at all. They are accelerating some projects that are underway. But stuff in the mid term future that doesn’t have funding is going to have a shortfall due to much lower revenue.
Yeah, these were projects that were scheduled to go out to bid over the next 12 months, but now they don’t have the money. Anything underway right now is continuing. And the stay at home has allowed them to do more extensive closures that will speed up some current projects. For example, they’ve been able to close I-40 at Aviation for this entire weekend rather than doing short piecemeal closures, and it’s going to shave an entire month off the project schedule.

The same goes for Glenwood avenue between brier creek and crabtree mall. The pavement is spalling badly and pothole patch jobs last for a couple of days at best.
Is your objection to DDIs in general or just the specific design for 440@WF?
I too am curious as to what's up with the disparagement around DDIs or if it's just something in particular about the proposal with 440@WF. DDIs have been shown to be remarkably safer than a standard highway interchange.
