The shopping center has basically been on life support since the start of this century, with tenants declining every year and few brand names left. COVID-19 merely hastened the inevitable. And while the article states that "The outside of the mall plans to reopen when it safe, according to a spokesperson," there will be very little incentive for people to go to those stores, in my opinion.
I can definitely see there only being two big indoor malls in the area going forward. Crabtree and either Southpoint or Triangle town. My bet is on Southpoint hanging on longer than TTC. Like Northgate, it was heading that way already but this will speed things up.
I've lived in Durham for 8 years and the only reason I've gone to Northgate is for the DMV. But that area is gentrifying so I'm excited to see what becomes of it.

Sad to see it go, but the times, they are a-changin. When we first moved to the area in the early '80s, we rented a house in Parkwood. Since we were just starting out, we needed a lot of things and Northgate was a good place to go. This weekend, I was noticing that I still have a couple things I bought at the Northgate Sears, including a B&D Workmate and a 5-foot wooden stepladder.

Although the whole story is behind a paywall, it is known that Florida-based LNR Partners bought Triangle Town Center for $120 million in August. Good luck to them getting a profit back on this investment. It doesn't look promising to keep an indoor mall there, in my opinion, especially with how anchors like Sears and Macy's have been doing.

Southpoint is doing great. It is packed during non-Covid times. I would be shocked if it folded. Northgate going under doesn't surprise me in the least.
Didn't Duke Med buy the Sears or Macy's at Northgate? Maybe Duke Med will buy the rest of it and have out-patient clinics with parking.
