Y'all think that just maybe, after the shock of last night, locally and nationally, you just might could make this a thread of community rather than one of division?
You want to stoke the seeds of division, there are other subforums for that where kind of commentary would be better placed and welcome.
I had friends downtown that said the protest was peaceful. There were outside instigators that started the vandalism and looting. Downtown Raleigh has been spray painted with white nationalist symbols. Given that there have been multiple reports of this happening around the country, it’s hard to believe this is not a coordinated effort to sow division.
On a positive note, the Downtown Raleigh Association had to ask volunteers to stop coming downtown because so many people showed up this morning to help with the clean up effort.
I’m hearing a number of DT business owners and DT residents ask the same question : “Where did the police disappear to last night?”
The first comment on Mary Baldwin’s feed from when she went live was this: “Why didn’t the police protect our city from the looting?”
But yet they wanted to antagonize the peaceful protestors ... smh
I was listening to the police audio feed last night. There wasn't enough manpower to do anything other than hold the state buildings and put out fires. Several officers requested backup to avoid getting overrun that wasn't available or coming to their aid so they had to retreat.
How exactly were the police antagonizing peaceful protesters? Nothing I saw on any of the local news showed anything of the sort.
My friends were downtown. The police were shooting them with tear gas and rubber bullets to break things up before it got violent. There were several reports of it happening on Twitter. The local news I’ve seen has been focused on the looting.
