Has anyone ever bought a half a cow? With the cost of beef(organic) hubby and I were talking about doing this. Has anyone done this and were did you buy from? Thanks!

I don't have an answer, but this has got to be the most unique question ever asked here. Kudos!! Worth a few rep points IMO!

I haven't, but I plan to buy in volume once I find a good freezer. You can find multiple local sellers if you go to the Carolina Farm Stewardship site and search for "beef": Carolina Farm Stewardship Association

You also could talk to some of the vendors at local farmer's markets. We were at the Durham Farmer's market this weekend and bought some grass-fed beef there. Most of the meat vendors I've talked to at Durham and at Moore Square are very interested in selling volume packages to customers. You just need the freezer space.

Having just looked into getting raw milk and needing to buy a portion of the cow to do so legally in NC, I found that there is a place in VA which drives down to Raleigh each Sat. to deliver raw milk, baked goods, and grass-fed meat. You can check their website and/or email them. They are very responsive. I am planning to buy a portion of a cow for the raw milk shortly.

You can find them at averysbranchfarms dot com.

Holy Halvers or is that Heffer! Any way I see this place sells beef by the pound, 1/4, 1/2 and possibly whole. I have no experience with them so I can't say one way or the utter. Sorry couldn't resist!

I'd suggest contacting a local farm. You can find them via the Goodness Grows in North Carolina web-site, Goodness Grows General Store
If you know of a processors that you'd like to use, there are farms listed with farms who raise their herds organically Goodness Grows General Store
If not, you can always buy the meat products Goodness Grows General Store

For those of you that might be interested in (other) local meats or farm products, it's worth browsing this online local marketplace.

Default Place to buy a half a cow in NC?

Oh, my! Half of a cow? Where's the other half? And just what half are you interested in? Is this poor animal cut around the middle, or symmetrically from one end to the other?

Your question says ". . . in NC?" Does this means cows are protected in other states?

Oh, LOL, but the title of this thread caught my eye. The devil made me do it, BTW.

I'd suggest heading over to the Durham or Carrboro farmer's market and talking to one of the local farmers there. At least a half dozen farmers in the Carrboro selling free range organic beef.

Thanks for the info. I think we are going to try the Durham farmers market and also maybe take a day trip to Baldwin Farms.
