I got an idea- Let’s build a huge lifetime center! That would be ideal. Also maybe a nice professional skating arena. We could then squeeze in a small grocery place too! I think we need to be more creative in our thinking
FWIW, stumbled across a self-congratulatory slide deck that Cary did about Fenton. Most of it is kinda meh (someone REALLY likes Avalon), but slide 39 shows site plans from 2015 on. Can clearly see that the Wegman's box in the front hasn't budged since then: https://www.townofcary.org/home/showdocument?id=20090
The 2012 Lennar proposal (slide 22) looks... fine, in retrospect? Speaking as a trained planner, I would've saved the higher-density push for the CTC site.
A map of Wegmans around Fairfax County* (similar population to Wake County, but on less than half the area) shows that they like to keep stores at least five miles apart, and more like ten miles apart.
The West Cary, East Cary, and ITB Raleigh stores would've been about five miles apart, with the WF, HS, CH stores about 7-10 miles beyond.
* In addition to those shown by Google, Wegmans are currently under construction in Reston, central Alexandria, upper northwest DC, and Rockville. One planned store was canceled in Arcola, about five miles west of Centreville.
wow good research. Interesting another store was cancelled. I think that is telling. I've been following Wegman's for a while (new stores) and don't think I have ever seen it previously. They sometimes delay a bit to start but usually when the store appears-it remains on! Sadly we experienced it here. Interesting location with Arcola-it's Wegmans' country there (massive expansion in last several years). There appears to be a gap between a ton of stores. I am sure the people there are not happy about it
Wegmans' is different from all other grocery stores. There are not that many! They care about each of their stores. When they opened CH, the tweet said, it's a special store, #105 in year 105. So to close off on a store is not something common. I feel badly for them honestly, they are probably not happy too
Also in the older stores, they used to have picture of Mr Wegmans (I thought he was founder but it appears he is the 2nd gen). The company is private and owned by a single family. They are unique in many aspects.
Btw he looked so nice, you couldn't help but like him. He also had an amazing quote 'you gotta treat others like you treat yourself' (I think something like this)-he really understood the value of good customer service, that is the real value of Wegmans how they treat the customer
Wegmans has canceled several stores over the last 18 months. In addition to Fenton and Arcola, they also canceled stores in Middletown, NJ and Annapolis.

oh wow, interesting. I remember the Annapolis store...wow how do you keep up? I don't think this is common. But it seems they had many stores on their planning at this point, more than normal (and things appear to have been on hold too for a long time).
Impressive...you are really detail oriented!
honestly we were lucky in Triangle to get the stores that we did...I think they really wanted to expand southward. We should be happy with the ones we got
I think they always wanted a few big draws in, but they're doing a pretty good job getting local places in there.
