I like to drive up into Virginia to the Blue Ridge Parkway and then head south. There are lots of hikes and other cultural things to do and see. This past weekend I went out to the Outer Banks, spent the day driving from place to place looking for birds. But that is definitely more than a 3 hour drive.

Without a doubt my favorite day trip from North Raleigh is a drive down to Wrightsville Beach to enjoy a day on the sand and in the Ocean. Takes me about 2.5 hours each way. Parking can be a bit tought during peak summer weekends but you can find spaces if you do a little hunting and it is easier on weekdays. Love to eat at the Oceanic right on the water then leave around 5 or 6pm and be home between 7:30 or 8pm.

Cool site! Just wish that they were live and not a prerecorded scene.

Have you been to the whirligig park in Wilson? Go when there is some wind to see them spin.

Great site! I'm in the Netherlands now. I needed a different perspective today.

As far as day trips from the Triangle, I like to just go to Wrightsville/Wilmington if we're not staying overnight, and if I'm being honest, IKEA. That counts as hiking I think.

Seagrove! I have gone when there is a festival or just on a Saturday and wandered into to various pottery shops. It is just over an hour away. Nearby in Asheboro is the zoo, which is great if you have never been. Topsail island (beaches, fishing or water sports) is 2-2.5 hours depending on where in the triangle you live.

Charlotte, is 2.5 hours and downtown can be fun to explore depending on what it open.

It's very open and I did stop in for a few. While masks were required,
social distancing apparently was not? The place was packed and it was the
first time since this mess started that I actually felt uncomfortable. I didn't
see any reason to stay any longer.
