I’m looking to live with my parents so I can help out with medical appointments and whatnot.
Our agent never mentioned Carolina Preserve to us. Is that a 55+ or “active adult” community? I’ll be the one purchasing the home, so we told her we aren’t looking for that sort of neighborhood.
You aren’t wrong about my snake concerns. I guess my biggest fear is that my dog or parents will accidentally step on or near one. My parents have pre-existing conditions, and I’m worried that a snake bite could very well result in a trip to the ICU or worse. I realize I may be blowing the snake situation in NC out of proportion, but having never had to deal with this type of situation before, I can’t help but worry. Thanks for being so patient with me, everyone!

Carolina Preserve is a 55+ community, but only one member of the family has to be over 55. Presumably, your parents would make you qualified.
A couple of other options in Durham might work for you: Fendol Farms, which is a new construction 55+ community, also Creekside at Bethpage. Then Croasdaile Farm is an existing community with some large 1 and 1/2 story places.
You might also look into Lennar's NextGen homes which feature a suite for parents with a separate entrance.

If your dog has the right to roam the yard there's always a chance of encountering a snake, if your parents are unable to see where they walk and don't have anyone with them I suppose that's a possibility too. IMHO you have many greater problems to solve with a move here, the biggest being finding a ranch near healthcare and amenities. I hope your realtor is ready to JUMP on any that become available because the dearth of them (outside 55+ communities) coupled with the crazy housing market means your work is already cut out for you.
Medical biggies like Duke have offices/facilities all over, in any suburban area. Including primary care, specialists, urgent care. You don’t need to live in Durham, or anywhere close by the “mother ship” hospital to get medical care. Medical care here is excellent and you’ll see medical facilities everywhere.
Excellent points all around. Thanks, all! We’ll look into the other communities you mentioned.
If anyone has anything to add for or against the Preserve, we would appreciate hearing that as well. We’d like to know if that 15+ minute commute includes traffic and how reliable internet and phone services are.

I live there. If you are from MA, as I was, your idea of traffic is not what people down here call traffic. I've been stuck in traffic maybe 4 times in 13 years.
4) close by to conveniences like grocery stores, pharmacies, banks, shopping, etc. we certainly wouldn’t want these things in our “backyard,” but a 15+ minute drive is a bit too much.

Pro: 3. The Preserve at Jordan Lake is probably very safe at night. It is surrounded by woods, and you are more likely to see deer and foxes than muggers.
Con: 4. I used Google maps to test the driving distance. Doctors in Cary are 15-16 minutes away. Pharmacy and grocery stores are 15 minutes away in Cary or Pittsboro. Note the winding streets to get out of The Preserve, so it is probably easier to shop in Pittsboro than in Cary.
Pro 4. Pittsboro has a world-class restaurant called the Inn at Fearrington, worth an occasional splurge. Otherwise you have the chain restaurant 15 minutes away in Cary.
There is also a branch of the Duke physicians group in Pittsboro, as well as a wellness center with a swimming pool.
Just a suggestion, I really hope you’ll consider a home in a more suburban setting, not so far out from everything. Sounds like You’re going to be the one running all the errands and those “15 minute trips” can get old real fast. I live in Apex and it’s about 15 minutes to Wegmans and 5 minutes to Publix, guess which one I go to the most! Maybe look at Wake Forest, it’s kind of suburban/country. Don’t know about ranch homes though.
