Has anyone pulled a permit for a shed? We've got one being delivered in a couple of weeks that exceeds Wake county's "any dimension greater than 12'" rule. Has anyone went through the permitting process for a shed? Is this something people even pull a permit for?
I've never pulled a permit for a shed, but pulled one for finishing our 3rd floor. The permit was given in one day. It's possible they are more backed up now, but I'm from the land of a permit takes months and possibly your first born child, so it worked for me.

I have built two, but both have been 12x12, so I didn't need the permit. If you go over the 12-foot limit, you do need a building permit.
How big is your lot? I am just finishing a project with a new garage. Hopefully, your shed doesn't push you over the Impervious Surface limits. That part has been a nightmare.
I pulled one for the 12x16 shed I had I built, but I’m in Town of Cary, so not a county permit. It was relatively easy to go downtown during their open hours and wait an hour or so to get it done. Not sure how difficult it is for the unincorporated county ones. It might get more complicated if you are on a well or septic system.

Thank you for the reply. I'm on a acre and a half, so the Impervious Surface limits aren't as big of a concern for me.

Yeah, I'm on well and septic and that's part of my worry. I haven't been able to find the setback requirements of avoiding the septic field and it's repair area.

I went through this with my garage. A lady from the county came out and probed the yard to make sure we were far enough away from the drain lines. I think it was a bit of a grey area in regards to the repair area. She ended up putting out about 20 flags, marking everything.

The last garage I built on my property required a scale drawing of my 6 acre lot (Wake county) with all the details. After spending hours on the drawing, they bounced it (an intern I believe) for being slightly off on one dimension (about a pencil lead thickness on the scale I was using) and I had to redraw to make them happy. Hopefully you don't run into anything thing like that!

Welp, I received my first DENIED stamp yesterday. While I had listed the shed size in the application, I neglected to also write it on the site plan. I also had to upload the completed the impervious surface calculations worksheet. Fingers crossed that that will be enough for the good folks down at the permit office.
I was surprised that the initial turn around time was so fast. Didn't really expect to hear anything at all for a couple of weeks.
