Hey, everyone. I was planning on renting a boat and doing some fishing out on Jordan Lake next weekend. I was just curious if anyone has been out there recently and could give me a fishing report? Anything biting? If so, anything good?
I planning on bringing some out of town guests that are really into bass and other large fish (not so much catfish). Any thoughts are appreciated!
I have not rented a boat to fish, but have fished in the Indian River area, and caught a variety of fish. I tried with plugs, but found live bate (shiners) worked best this time of year. After it gets warm the fish will hit plugs. Caught cat fish, crappie, and several I had never seen (I am more a salt water fisherman than fresh water). Some of the cat fish weighed several pounds and the crappie would break a pound or more.
Jordan is a good big bass lake. I don't get to fish as much as I would like these days but I have talked to several people who have been catching some good fish lately. The big deal at Jordan now is the crappie fishing.

I have heard it is a good bass lake, but I was also told you would need a guide to get started. I think you are right on the crappie. You can almost smell them in the water.
To start with, i'm no lake fishing expert. I do fish the lakes some, but usually my fishing time now is short enough that a quick trip to a farm pond is about all I can do. I guess i'm fortunate in that i've lived here all my life and I know some folks who are "lake pros" and I just ride with them when I do get the chance.
I don't guide but don't waste your time and money with guests coming. Hire a local guide, his boat, his bait, his gear and you will catch fish. Fun for you and your guests. At the end you will actually have saved a substantial amount of money as opposed to renting a boat from what everyone who has rented has told me.
If you've got too many guests for one boat, most guides can line up another guide, and you can have a mini tournament...which can be a lot of competitive fun. You can google Jordan Lake fishing guides, and find several. I've never fished with Jamie Olive, but I know the family pretty well...he grew up in the area before the lake existed, so he's pretty familiar with the honey holes on Jordan and Harris...can recommend which lake is better this time of year, and on the particular day you want to fish. Enjoy it! Keep an eye to the sky for the birds of prey...they're fascinating!
