I went to a funeral in my teens.
My dad's cousin's husband.
He was a biology teacher, and had a house menagerie.
Coyote, alligators, fish, a free range duck in the house. Etc. Etc.
And, a cobra in the basement. One day it bit him on the palm, the fleshy part at the thumb.
He was dead at the top of the basement steps.
In his 40's, IIRC. Very popular.
His students crying their eyes out at the funeral and after.
And, it was formative for me. WHY do people mess with this stuff?
There needs to be an escape plan and anti venom somewhere local. Ok I’m sure someone dumb enough to have this as a “pet” went through all these steps. (What is an escape plan, anyway?). No word yet on whether there is anti venom around here.
I’m just waiting for someone to post a pic on Nextdoor “is this a copperhead?”
Read some articles and literature from an NC State vet who studies this type of snake. There is NO anti-venom for this particular snake's venom.
However, he said the fatality rate (from the literature he's reviewed) is very low. But, and a big but, is that this snake's venom will cause A LOT of tissue damage. It can cause necrosis in fat, muscle, connective tissue and blood vessels. Many people need plastic surgery for reconstruction if the bite releases a lot of venom.
