Well, there's Biltmore, which you cannot have missed knowing about, due to the 8000 commercials they run, but it may be booked already and not cheap.

What about Williamsburg, VA? Not "NC" but closer than many parts of NC.

Lots of smaller towns east of here have "Christmas tours" of the historic homes, but that would bore kids to death.

The OP mentioned they have been to Biltmore and Williamsburg in the past.

I was going to suggest Bryson City, which is where the Big Polar Express train is. I've never been but have heard it is quite lovely. BUT I'm sure the train has been sold out for weeks at this point, and it sounds like you don't want to drive to the mountains.

Someone mentioned Tanglewood in Winston. I live in Greensboro, and Tanglewood is a bit of a cluster in December. You can easily sit in your car three to four hours before you get through the gate. My husband and I went a year or two before our 12-year-old was born and we said we would never do it again. But it's a tradition for some folks. You might like it, but I wanted to help manage expectations.

I've been wondering about McAdenville, as well. With the little research I've done, it doesn't look like there is lodging or many restaurants/shops but you can walk around. I'd like to hear more from someone that has been there recently.

Not traveling this year and have no real plans, if there were something quiet to go to it would be good to get out for a few hours, I've never not done anything for the holiday.
