"Welcome aboard, Raleigh-Durham! We’re excited to add a new US destination to our network, and look forward to exploring NC’s Triangle region, big on Southern charm and a gateway to beaches & mountains. North Carolinians, what’s great in your state?"

Icelandair also has a great connection to the rest of Europe! Looking forward to this route myself!

I was supposed to fly Icelandair to Europe in May 2020, with a 3 day stopover in Reykjavik on the return flight back (they allow you to add an extended layover to your European round trip at no additional charge to encourage people to visit Iceland). But after flights were cancelled, it took more than 3 months and many frustrating attempts at calls and emails to finally get my refund. Left a bad taste for the airline.

Watch out for the elves!

But seriously this is cool. Iceland has been on my bucket list for a while.

I had a similar experience with an Icelandair flight that I booked for September 2020 which was cancelled about 2-3 weeks ahead of the flight. It was from Seattle to Frankfurt, Germany via a connection in Reykjavik. It was a huge hassle to get the refund - the airline did almost nothing, I had to get my credit card company to put on the pressure to get the refund.

I would be hesitant to book an Icelandair flight until I was confident the airline has its flight schedule running normally (without frequent flight cancellations). I have flown on previous Icelandair flights to and from Germany - USA with no problem. Service was fine, flights arrived and departed on schedule.

RDU-REK is 3041 nautical miles. Easy for their 757s. Doable by their 737 MAX. Don't expect a widebody on this route.
